Space Sharing Tools — developed by CIEMAT

Residential Buildings Tool

Could sharing residential space reduce the need for new construction? The Residential Buildings Tool explores space sharing as a circular economy strategy for European housing.

Based on the CO₂NSTRUCT citizen behaviour survey, it compares a no-sharing baseline with three levels of willingness to share: strong, medium and slight. Users can investigate how these scenarios affect residential building stock, operational energy consumption and CO₂ emissions across European countries.

An interactive map links country selections to charts and detailed datasets, allowing users to compare scenarios and examine both absolute results and potential percentage savings.

Office Buildings Tool

How could more flexible and shared workplace use reduce the amount of office space required while maintaining its functionality? The Office Buildings Tool applies the CO₂NSTRUCT space sharing methodology to office environments.

It compares a no-sharing baseline with strong, medium and slight willingness to share scenarios, combining behavioural assumptions with country-specific building, occupancy and energy data. Users can explore the resulting changes in office building stock, operational energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Interactive maps, charts and datasets enable comparisons across countries and scenarios, helping users examine the potential of more intensive workplace use to reduce space demand.
