What could greater use of wood mean for material demand and emissions in European buildings? The Wood Switch Dashboard explores the technical potential for replacing eligible steel and concrete with wood in new construction and residential renovation.
It compares a business-as-usual scenario (BAU), which maintains current material intensities, with WOOD+, which applies the maximum technically eligible wood substitution from 2026. Users can explore results for the EU27 and individual Member States through interactive charts and a 3D building model.
The dashboard connects substitution potential with building activity, material demand, material production emissions (A1–A3) and documented wood supply constraints. WOOD+ represents a technical potential scenario rather than a forecast of adoption, helping users examine both the opportunities and the resource implications of increased wood use.
