Wood (Sawn Wood)

Wood is a renewable and carbon-storing material, making it a key player in circular construction. The dominant used wood type in construction is sawn wood followed by particle boards, made from wood chips and resin, and fibre board, made from wood fibre. The following circular economy practices are focused on sawn wood. In manufacturing, reuse of offcuts for furniture or insulation is common. Repurposing includes using planks for cladding or flooring. Recycling is practiced through cascade utilization, where wood is successively used in lower-grade products like particleboard and fibreboard. Recovery of wood waste for energy is also widespread.

At the end of life, wood can be repurposed into composite materials or recycled into panels. However, contamination and classification as waste can limit reuse. Ultimately, most wood ends up being recovered for energy, especially in countries with strong biomass energy sectors.
