LNEG was invited to join ECEMP24 on October 16-17 in Brussels. The event brings together “policy officers” from the European Commission (DG CLIMA, DG ENER and DG RTD) and representatives of modeling groups from various European institutions involved in EU research projects. The main objective is to bring the two groups together, to exchange information more effectively between scientists and policy decision-makers in the domain of modeling for carbon neutrality.
LNEG presented its work “Modelling GHG mitigation along the construction value chain: how to consider energy and materials flows in the EU” within the scope of the CO2NSTRUCT project and highlighted the importance of a continuous dialogue between modelers and decision-makers.
The event served as a platform to strengthen ties with the DGs and compare results with the JRC, discussing trajectories until 2040/50 and needs for new research areas. The combination of data and the use of “open source” models was a focal point, highlighting the importance of informed and transparent policies.
The next challenges in energy modeling in Europe were identified: the analysis of the role of the circular economy for carbon neutrality, issues of justice in the energy transition, speed in the implementation of technologies and variability/sensitivity analyzes of less mature technologies. Here at LNEG we will certainly work on all these fronts.
